Ransomware

Recently, we have observed an increase in Ransomware. Ransomware is a virus which encrypts files on a computer or server. The only way to recover from this is by restoring the files from backup. Most of what has been observed has come into an environment via email. Things you can do to reduce your risk to Ransomware include:

  • Educate users to be careful what emails they open
  • Don’t open emails from people you don’t know and delete attachments you weren’t expecting
  • Make sure your email is being filtered for spam and viruses before it arrives in your inbox
  • Complete your backups nightly to include all critical data to ensure a successful backup

Even with an updated firewall and spam filtering it is still possible for Ransomware to get in. User education is very important.
